Working in hospital hr is no easy job. Hospitals have so many employees, that it can be hard to keep up with. Especially those employees trying to get all of their documentation in for hiring/onboarding such as nurses, nurse practitioners, essentially everyone with some kind of license, and especially physicians. Physicians can sometimes get lost in the shuffle during hiring/onboarding because the amount of documentation they need to just get their foot in the door is so expansive. State licensing, medical school transcripts, and documentation of successful residency and fellowship. As a Hospital HR rep, it can be easy to focus so much on those necessary documents and forget that there is a human behind all those piles of paperwork. One way to help avoid this is to establish a checklist and system for each hire. Having an established and organized system to make sure all paperwork is in will help make communication with the incoming physician pleasant and effective – rather than frustrating (think: “I already sent you this document, check your email!”). Once the checklist of the hiring documents themselves has been fulfilled there should be some system in place to ensure a smooth onboarding of the physicians. Training schedules should be made. An office should be established. Computers should be sitting on that office desk ready to go. There should be tours of clinics and departments the physician will be working in. Introductions should be made. A lunch should be scheduled. Physicians can sometimes get a bad reputation for being difficult from day one simply because of a difficult hiring and onboarding situation. If Hospital HR can do its part to set a process to hiring and onboarding that is as seamless as possible, physicians will come in much happier as well as ready to get to work.
