Medical waste has been a major problem for healthcare facilities of all kinds since well before the COVID-19 pandemic, but with increasing demand for PPE and other equipment, concerns about waste have increased as well. The economic and environmental impact of medical waste, along with lessons learned while battling the pandemic, have led facilities across the country to rethink their approach to waste reduction.
Renewed focus on recycling, testing the safety of reusable equipment (vs. disposable options), sterilization methods, inventory management, and redesigning surgical supply packages can all lead to reduced waste.
