Oracle Unveils New Sparc M7 Processors

Yesterday was OpenWorld, Oracle Software’s annual expo. It was an opportunity for the computing giant to present new products to the public. This year’s big reveal was the Sparc M7, which the company thinks could revolutionize cloud computing. When a file is saved “to the cloud,” it is actually stored on a processor which can be accessed remotely via the internet. Ordinarily, this processor is on a shelf full of processors in a data center full of shelves. These buildings consume vast amounts of electricity and have been criticized for contributing to global warming. They are also vulnerable to hacker attacks. The Sparc M7 is different because it compresses data more easily than other processors, which will hopefully mean smaller, more efficient data centers. The microprocessors are also more efficient in data processing, which means faster loading and less lag. John Fowler, Oracle’s Vice President, said, “I don’t believe that the million-server data center powered by a hydroelectric dam is the scalable future of enterprise computing.” Oracle executives also believe the M7 is a major leap forward for security. The processor automatically detects hacker attacks with a security system built into the chip itself. It also tags important areas of memory as sensitive data, which prevents hijacked software from reading it. The impact of these security precautions on processing speed should be negligible. Hopefully the Sparc M7 will soon have all our cloud computing running more smoothly. For more about Oracle and their Enterprise Resource Planning software please click through to visit our website.
